Developed by Dynamighty, CounterSpy is one of those short but entertaining “Don’t talk to me or else I’ll die!” games. It was made free to download on PlayStation Vita for PS Plus members this month, otherwise it is regularly $14.99. The game is set during the Cold War and has neat little historical facts about nuclear and space programs added to the load screens. The player can really see the influence from Creative Director Mark Holmes who use to work at Pixar. The graphics are bold, angular and aggressive, fitting for a spy game. The first thing we see in the trailer is a broadcasting test pattern from Wellington Wells Broadcasting Corporation. It resembles the Indian head test that was widely used up until the 1970’s. At the top of the tower there are two eye shapes, over lapping horizontally and vertically which makes me think of a surveillance state where everyone is being watched all the time. At the bottom of the screen is a profile of a woman, encircled with a crown on top. Knowing that the game is set in “an alternative 1960s England” I would believe that this is meant to be the young Queen Elizabeth II, or another royal figure that will be introduced in the game. Salang Pass, the name of this season’s fifth episode, is where a large group of Soviet troops were killed in a tunnel fire during the Soviet war in Afghanistan. It is not known exactly how many perished. Directed by Kevin Dowling and written by Stephen Schiff, this episode felt more focused on specific scenes than the last episode, even when it was jumping around to progress story lines.
The creator of forma.8, a small Italian studio called Mixed Bag Games, made a statement today that the game has not been released yet despite an announcement last February that it would be available in 2014. Since their initial excitement last year, the clock kept ticking but their priorities redirected and the micro-studio found themselves unable to meet the timeline they had originally set. In an explanation Mauro Fanelli went into detail about what caused the lack of a release, specifically speaking to the visual aspects of the game. From what I can see from the announcement trailer, this space-topian action adventure deserves all of the time they took to perfect their baby. This is the reason Mixed Bag opened, so you know they want to make sure everything is perfect and deliver a game that truly reflects their vision. Four years in the making the screenshots for forma.8 are astounding. The color layering creates a remarkable depth for a 2D game. The geometric shapes, variance and balance in color and shading makes me wonder if every screenshot coming from forma.8 will look like a work of modern art. As stated in their second announcement, the game will be running at 60 frames per second on the Vita, making for a stunningly smooth gameplay experience.
I’m gonna go ahead and let Mixed Bag Games take all the time they need for a flawless release. Yes, they have my permission. If you’re going to the Game Developer’s Conference next week they will be showing a demo. Hopefully everything works out for them this year and the game will be released soon because I want to play it now!!!
There it is. The next season of American Horror Story will be themed “Hotel” with Lady Gaga in a lead role. The FX show was approved for thirteen episodes and will premiere in October 2015. Nothing yet on IMDB or FX websites.
Knytt Underground was released for multiple platforms (including how I played, on the PSVita) just before 2013. It was created by Nicklas Nygren, or Nifflas, and published by Ripstone Games. The game has a great aesthetic throughout. the foreground is all black, creating parts of the game you can interact with. Most things that are black you can either walk on or climb. The beauty is in the background with scenic images of nature. Trees, flowers and even radiant color-scapes are all easy on the eyes. Continue reading →
OMG. OMG. OMG. Before I hyperventilate…. Yes, Engine Software and Re-Logic have just announced Terraria Otherworld. The pre-alpha work looks amazing as you can see in the video. I am instantly in love with the color scheme, the glow, ‘glitter’ and the new array of graphics with the same familiar Terraria feel. The game is going to continue with the sandbox adventure but with a greater RPG and strategy base. For me, I can’t put the first Terraria down! I’ve had it on my Vita since it’s first download. I love building, fighting and… dying. The challenge of trying to recoup from your death and refortify your defenses or build stronger weapons to finally defeat an enemy (who has already killed you 26 times) is one of those thrills that you can only get from video games. Add a dark, mysterious theme to it and you’ve just made gold.
Married with Jonathan van den Wijngaarden’s music (who also composed the soundtrack for Kick and Fennick), it’s sure to be an even greater success than the original Terraria. I hope we can get some more information from the upcoming GDC next month. I guess we will all wait in anticipation as the only thing missing from this announcement is a release date!
Yay! Another game for free download on the PlayStation Vita! Destiny of Spirits was developed exclusively for the Vita by SCE Japan Studio and Q Entertainment. You have to allow the game to use Location Data or else you cannot play. It’s kind of like social networking sites where you can send friend requests and receive “mail”. The game’s trailer above is actually a great representation of the game you will be playing. The latest episode, Open House, was noticeably different from last week’s, Baggage. The scenes seemed much longer and more intimate. At times the anxiety from so much action and extended periods without speaking became unbearable – in a great way. It was a good balance so that the viewer could take in more visual information without being overwhelmed trying to follow what the characters were saying. Maybe that’s just my ADD talking but I found myself responding more to the first outing this season from writer, Stuart Zicherman and director, Thomas Schlamme.
Just to get it out of the way now, nothing happened in this episode to progress Nina’s or Yousaf’s stories, and the goings on at the Rezidentura were minimal.
I downloaded Kick and Fennick solely because it was free for PlayStation Plus members to download (February deal). The trailer makes this game look amazing but here’s the plot summary: A boy wakes up in a brightly colored electronic dystopia with well maintained facilities, despite an overflow of plant life, and it takes 45 seemingly similar levels to get his robot friend a battery.
